The Deep – Aquarium, Hull, U.KThe Deep – The World’s Only Submarium in North-East England
An amazing underwater aquarium with Europe's deepest viewing tunnel, The Deep is home to sharks, fish and now baby seahorses.
The Deep is a Millenium Project funded charitable public Aquarium which opened in March 2002. The aquarium has seen over 2 million visitors pass through its doors to visit this home to over 40 sharks and more than 3,500 fish. It is located in Hull on the Humber Estuary in the North of England about an hour from York on the UK's east coast. The Humber Estuary is the meeting of two rivers – River Hull and River Humber which has seen majestic sailing ships pass by in its heyday when ships regularly sailed up the River Hull to the then major port of Beverley. The River Hull still today remains an unloading area; much of the wool trade, whaling and fishing industry has well gone, but The Deep has blown new life into the area. Being such a new and innovative project means that the whole venture started life being ‘green’. The Deep is a member of The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), the professional organisation representing the nation’s best zoos and aquariums. It is also involved in research projects that relate to animal conservation and supports the Marine Conservation Society. For an educative family day out or school trip The Deep has plenty to keep little hands and young minds active, with 22,000 students passing through its doors in 2007. Their in-house teachers have produced a learning programme for the different key stages. They also offer presentations on Customer Care, Marketing and Travel & Tourism for post 16 year-olds. This year - the Year of the Frog -The Deep has added two new species to its collection from Chester Zoo: White’s Tree Frogs and the Golden Poison Arrow Frog, the most poisonous animal on the planet. They already hold Green and Black Poison Arrow Frogs and the Blue Poison Arrow Frog and are fighting to increase public awareness to the plight of the species. These along with 50 percent of the world’s amphibians are in danger of extinction. With plenty of different galleries and exhibitions from Slime to the Twilight Zone and in the deepest viewing tunnel in Europe (you’ll find yourself 10 meters under the sea with sharks swimming above you) – this visit isn’t for the faint of heart. The Deep has just announced the birth of 25 seahorses, just in time for Father’s Day! For more information, prices and even online tickets visit The Deep website.
